CANTA

Canta is a mixed-age, parent and child program for children ages 0-5 that teaches Spanish through music and movement. Music effortlessly awakens children’s eagerness to use language, and helps with memory retention, syllable recognition, and pronunciation. The first few years of a child’s life are a crucial time for both language acquisition and musical development, and Canta offers children the opportunity to explore both!

A variety of Latin American folk songs and contemporary songs are used to teach age-appropriate vocabulary like colors, numbers, animals, body parts, weather, food, occupations, chores, and feelings.

Canta uses singing, dancing, instruments, props, and puppet shows to make our classes a richly musical and playful way to introduce Spanish to your family. It is not necessary to know Spanish to follow along. Posters with lyrics, and the simple and repetitive song selections allow everyone to participate regardless of your familiarity with the language. Fully fluent families will enjoy sharing quality musical time with their child while reinforcing their Spanish.

Our classes are held once a week for 45 minutes in an intimate setting, with no more than 12 children per class. We invite parents, grandparents and/or caregivers to participate, and to learn fun ways to incorporate Spanish at home. Our classes provide an engaging and nurturing environment for children. We honor all kinds of learning styles which means children are welcome to experience the class as observers, active participants or explorers. Children are amazing learners and pick up so much about the world around them by simply being present.

Each semester of Canta explores one of our three song collections. Each collection has approximately 24 songs, and we rotate our song collections so families can take three full semesters of class without repeating the same songs. Our selections are sung by a variety of artists, all of whom are native Spanish speakers.

Registration includes a cd and a beautifully illustrated songbook with lyrics and translations for families to sing, enjoy, and further explore the songs at home.

JUEGA (Coming soon! - Pending new location)

Juega is a wonderful way to continue your child’s language learning. The mixed-age program helps children string vocabulary together and participate in everyday conversation. Rather than teaching Spanish in an academic manner, we engage children in a variety of games, hands on activities, dramatic play, puppet shows, songs and chants. The target conversational pieces are embedded in the play activity and learning occurs naturally.

Class time offers families an opportunity to play and communicate with each other entirely in Spanish. The combination of demonstration, repetition, and activity focused learning means even beginner Spanish speaking parents can take part in a full immersion environment. Because the class is based on conversation, families can continue to practice phrases at home and start forging a bilingual relationship with their child.

Families who are already fluent in Spanish will find Juega provides their children with the invaluable opportunity to be role models for other children, while at the same time forging relationships with peers in Spanish. Registration includes a beautifully illustrated parent handbook with activities families can do at home to reinforce conversations learned in class.

VIVE (Coming soon! - Pending new location)

Vive is a drop off immersion class so children can live the language. Classes will be small with no more than 6 participants so each child can receive as much attention and exposure to Spanish as possible from the teacher. Each class will be 2.5 hrs long, combing both indoor and outdoor play time. Class will start with self guided indoor play time, children will be offered a choice of materials to explore, all of which can be used a basis for conversation and offer opportunities to introduce or reinforce vocabulary. Children can gravitate towards themes and activities that peak their interest, while the teacher visits each child and initiates a conversation about work. We'll then venture outside where children will have an opportunity to be learn language associated with outdoor themes through activities that iinclude gardening, sports, art, and plants and animals. We'll re-group indoors where children will participate in setting the table, preparing their snack, enjoy a meal together, and then clean up. Class will end with a hands on, teacher led group activity that will explore areas such as art, science, storytelling/reading, and dramatic play.
