Semillitas de Español is committed to offering everyone the opportunity to play and make music in Spanish with people of all socio-economic backgrounds. We are proud to offer CANTA scholarships to families of Casa Marianella, a local non-profit that offers housing, educational opportunities, and case management to Spanish speaking families of limited financial resources. They are a truly unique organization that strives to help families become empowered and self sufficient rather than just offering charity.
What we hope to offer these families is an opportunity to share an enriching musical experience together. In turn, these families offer a tremendous gift to Semillitas. Their participation is invaluable to our classes so that non-fluent families can have as much exposure to Spanish as possible. It's also a huge benefit to language learning when children can learn not only from their teacher, but also their peers. On the other hand, it's a wonderful learning experience for fluent children to act as role models in class, and a clear message that their bilingualism is a special tool to retain, practice, and be proud of.
"I am picking up Spanish much more quickly than I did in high school and college because of the teacher's movements and gestures with each song. They should teach Spanish this way to adults!! My daughter is really learning the songs as well...it is wonderful to hear her singing in Spanish."
